AX easy chairs by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard Nielsen for Fritz Hansen, set of 2

Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard Nielsen for Fritz Hansen
Design: 1960s | Manufactured: 1978

The AX Easy Chair, designed by Danish architect Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen in the 1960s, is a standout example of mid-century Scandinavian design. Crafted from molded laminated wood, it showcases a sleek, minimalist aesthetic, emphasizing comfort and functionality. With its organic curves and clean lines, the chair reflects the timeless elegance and craftsmanship characteristic of Danish modernism.

The front and back of the chairs are upholstered with Pierre Frey’s high-end, warm yellow/beige fabric. The original frames are restored and newly painted in deep black, creating a strong graphic contrast with the fabric.

Peter Hvidt was a Danish furniture designer who lived from 1916 to 1986. He is best known for his minimalist and functional designs that were popular in the mid-20th century. Hvidt’s furniture pieces were often made from natural materials such as wood and leather, and his designs were characterized by their clean lines and simple forms. His most famous works include this Hvidt & Mølgaard Ax chair and the Hvidt & Mølgaard coffee table. Hvidt’s designs have had a lasting impact on furniture design and are admired by many today.
